Within the social realm, the people of Germany experienced an emotional void caused by the national humiliation after the loss of the war and subsequent economic decay described above. Germany witnessed a substantial level of poverty characterized by the reparation for war costs for the Allies, hyperinflation, and unemployment in the aftermath of World War I. ![]() The context of public life in Berlin of the 1930s can largely be explored in the economic, social, and political situations. 322 specialists online The Context of the Public in 1930s Berlin ![]()

![]() 12 business adventures5/22/2023 ![]() Sharpening your business acumen doesn't have to be a boring affair. ![]() Related: Bill Gates Made These 15 Predictions Back in 1999 - and It's Scary How Accurate He Was ![]() Insider trading, which shares the story of how insider trading laws became more strictly enforced following a 1959 exposé of corruption at Texas Gulf Sulphur amidst exploding investor gains. Carver's stories were brilliant in their detachment and use of the oblique, ambiguous gesture, yet there were signs of a different sort of sensibility at work. Suggestive rather than explicit, and seeming all the more powerful for what is left unsaid, Carver's stories were held up as exemplars of a new school in American fiction known as minimalism or "dirty realism," a movement whose wide influence continues to this day. Beneath his pared-down surfaces run disturbing, violent undercurrents. In collections such as Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? and What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Raymond Carver wrote with unflinching exactness about men and women enduring lives on the knife-edge of poverty and other deprivations. ![]() Michel faber under the skin review5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He’s right: There’s very little about Book that you could call wacky. “If I’d written a work of literary fiction that was as wacky as the Lee/Kirby stories, then there would be very few grown-ups who could groove to that, because the comics were for children.” “We become less credulous as we become older,” he says. But when asked why all the wonder in the book seems so banal from Peter’s perspective, Faber responds in the cheerful-but-blunt manner of someone who spends a lot of time living away from people. In brief, it sounds like a generic science-fiction novel: A missionary named Peter travels to a planet called Oasis to bring the word of God to an inscrutable race of aliens.įaber offers a clue in the acknowledgements to one of the book’s big mysteries by expressing his “appreciation for the team of writers, pencilers, and inkers who worked at Marvel Comics during the 1960s and 1970s, giving me such enjoyment as a child and ever since.” In an interview at the Sorrento Hotel’s Fireside Room, Faber happily elaborates on his homage, identifying characters’ names - “Stanko is Steranko” - and explaining that he wanted to write a book that produced the sense of wonder and possibility he felt as a comics reader. Like Faber’s debut novel, Under the Skin, Book is a genre-twisting story told in a spare, dispassionate style. This is a book of secrets, only some of which are eventually revealed on the page. You can feel a subconscious life seething beneath the narrative in Michel Faber’s The Book of Strange New Things. ![]() The fisherman by john langan5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() And then… Then Langan hooked me with his hook like a seasoned fisherman so that I just turned page after page in rapture and wondered what else was in store for me. ![]() Except that the first part of some 70 pages of The Fisherman seemed so trivial and simple to me, so for a moment I decided that maybe I was mistaken, maybe this is not the story that will grab me. I wasn’t familiar with John Langan as an author, but I had that sweet feeling that never lied to me-something fascinating was coming. And at this point, I allow myself the odd luxury of just picking it up and starting to read, without remembering what it’s about – well, blindly. The book sits on the shelf until one day its beautiful cover reminds me of it. I often buy books because I read a short summary somewhere and found the plot interesting, and then forget about them for months. Holtrop5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() I will say it does locate the fire farther back toward the back wall where my flue is located, so a lot of the heat produced by the flames is right under the flue. I never had a problem with smoking as my chimney drafts quite well, so I can't comment on that quite as much. ![]() As far as function, it requires a LOT less attention than a traditional grate as it kind of self-feeds and keeps the wood on a hot bed of coals with a little less air supply so there's not a pressing need to rotate the logs to provide fresh fuel because one side has burnt out quickly. For those with more decorative touches or neat and orderly brick surrounds and hearths, I think the additional accessories would probably help dress it up. I don't have any of the decorative stuff, but have a more industrial/rough finish look to the surround and mantel anyway. Note that I mostly bought this fire grate to reduce the amount of maintenance/attention my fires needed throughout the burn. The Grate Wall of Fire fireback is perfectly good (though a bit pricey as they don't charge for shipping, which must be a hit to them). Were I to do this again, I'd probably look for a local shop that could cut me a 1/2" steel fireback and weld a couple feet on, but that's beside the point. I bought this for my prefab fireplace with the 26" fireback that just about perfectly covers the back refractory panel of my fireplace. Had trouble finding much consolidated discussion on this particular product across the forum, just a couple good reviews and a couple bad reviews. ![]() Revelation space5/21/2023 ![]() Vehicles system, as fairly powerful suits akin to powered armour are a part of the action Tech levels from modern-day up to man-portable antimatter guns / non-destructive mind uploading / near-lightspeed drivesĮasily hackable powers system for representing the advanced technology available to human-mod factions like the Ultras, Demarchists and Conjoiners In terms of era, anything from the Coalition/Conjoiner War in the Sol system through to the war against the Inhibitors (or even Greenfly although that would be a little depressing)Īble to accommodate power levels from normal human up to low-end superhero (which is where I would place the Conjoiners or Inhibitors) I am thinking primarily of the Revelation Space-verse rather than his other stuff. ![]() ![]() I'm enjoying some Alastair Reynolds recently and, naturally, thoughts turn to using it as a game setting. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It may even have been the poisons specialist who just so happens to be staying in a nearby village.Įveryone staying at Styles has secrets they are trying to keep, but Poirot cuts through these deceptions with the resourcefulness, exactitude, and attention to detail that has made him one of the most intriguing figures in literary history.
